St. Xavier’s Body Exposition 2024

21 November, 2024 - 5 January, 2025

Free

The Exposition of the Body of St. Francis Xavier is one of the most anticipated events for devotees, especially those who revere the saint as the Patron Saint of Goa, affectionately called “Goencho Saib” in Konkani. This sacred occasion, held once every ten years, allows pilgrims to view the saint’s body up close, which is normally enclosed in a glass and silver casket and placed at a height in the Basilica of Bom Jesus. During the Exposition, the casket is lowered for public viewing, drawing large crowds of faithful who come to pay their respects and seek blessings. Many devotees report experiencing healing through the intercession of St. Francis Xavier, enhancing their devotion to him.

St. Xavier’s Body Exposition 2024

The next decennial exposition of St. Francis Xavier’s relics is scheduled from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, announced by Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa and Daman. The event’s theme, “We are Messengers of the Good News,” emphasizes spreading love, hope, and peace. It will feature special prayers, processions, an art exhibition, and a souvenir book on St. Francis Xavier’s life, aligning with the Jubilee Year 2025 theme “Pilgrims of Hope.”

Historical Background of the Exposition
The first public veneration of St. Francis Xavier’s body took place on March 16-18, 1554, in the Church of S. Paulo, soon after it was brought to Goa. Initially buried near the main altar, the body was exhumed six years later and never buried again. In 1665, the relic was moved to the present Chapel of Bom Jesus. Over the years, the saint’s vestments, coffin, casket, and tomb have undergone several changes. Numerous miraculous healings have been documented and verified, further cementing the saint’s revered status.

Architectural and Historical Significance of the Basilica of Bom Jesus
The Basilica of Bom Jesus, renowned for its simplicity and elegance, is a prime example of Jesuit and baroque architecture in India. It was India’s first minor basilica, consecrated on May 15, 1605, by Archbishop Alexio de Menezes and dedicated to Bom Jesus, meaning Good Jesus. Architect Julio Simao and Br. Domingoes Fernandes SJ played significant roles in constructing this magnificent edifice, funded by Don Herorino Mascarenhas.

The church is built in a cruciform layout with a single nave, a sanctuary, and two vaulted chapels at its transepts. Measuring 55.7 meters long, 16.76 meters broad, and 18.59 meters high, it uses red laterite stone, common in Goa, to highlight its architectural grandeur. The three-storied granite façade features Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian columns in stages, with the top adorned by a stone carving of IHS upheld by angels, signifying Jesus Christ and the Jesuit order.

The Mausoleum and Relics of St. Francis Xavier
The mausoleum of St. Francis Xavier, located in the right transept of the Basilica, is an artistic marvel designed by Florentine sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini. Funded by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosmas III, the mausoleum was installed in 1698 after ten years of craftsmanship. It features a rectangular jasper base adorned with cherubs and angels in white marble. The large bluish marble coffer, with bronze shields depicting scenes from the saint’s life, rests on this base. The silver casket containing the relics was completed in 1637 through the efforts of Fr. Marcello Mastrelli and local artists, working alongside European priests and artists, particularly from Flanders.

Significance of the Relics
The exposition marks a spiritual journey of renewal and hope for individuals, families, parishes, and the entire Church in Goa and Daman, as well as the Universal Church. The preservation of St. Francis Xavier’s body, defying decomposition for centuries, is considered a sign of his sainthood and miraculous life. His missionary zeal, compassion for the marginalized, and unwavering commitment to social justice continue to inspire devotees and visitors alike.
